A Simple and Delicious Egyptian Feteer Recipe

Feteer, also known as the Egyptian pancake or layered pastry, is a delightful and flaky dessert that is both simple to make and incredibly delicious. This article will guide you through creating a basic sweet feteer with step-by-step instructions and tips for customization.

Ingredients

For the Dough:

2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup vegetable oil or melted butter 3/4 cup warm water, adjust as needed

For the Filling (Optional):

1/2 cup sugar, adjust to taste 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted 1/2 cup nuts (like walnuts or pistachios), chopped (optional) 1/2 cup raisins (optional) 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

For the Topping:

Honey or syrup for drizzling Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

Make the Dough:

In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Gradually add the vegetable oil and mix until crumbly. Slowly add warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms. Adjust the water as needed for the right consistency. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Prepare the Filling:

If using, mix the sugar, nuts, raisins, and cinnamon in a small bowl and set aside.

Roll Out the Dough:

After resting, divide the dough into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a thin circle about 10-12 inches in diameter on a floured surface. Brush each rolled-out piece with melted butter.

Layer the Dough:

Place a portion of the filling mixture over one rolled-out dough circle. Top with the next piece of dough, and repeat the process until all layers are stacked. Brush the top layer with melted butter.

Cook the Feteer:

Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Carefully transfer the layered feteer to the skillet. Cook for about 5-7 minutes on each side or until golden brown and flaky.

Serve:

Once done, remove from heat and let it cool slightly. Drizzle with honey or syrup and dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Feteer can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature and is perfect for breakfast or dessert. Customize the filling by adding different nuts, fruits, or spices to suit your taste. Enjoy your delicious Egyptian feteer!
