Childhood Achievements: A Journey of Faith and Performance

Childhood is a time of incredible growth and learning. From the adventures on the playground to the first steps of faith, childhood achievements hold a special place in our hearts. As a little kid, I reveled in every moment I could think of, from outdoor games to experiments in science. Nothing scared me, and I was more than happy to explore the world around me. My interests were diverse, ranging from swimming and cycling to the joy of conducting experiments at home. However, my greatest achievement was discovering Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, a beacon of light that forever changed my life.

Growing Up in Arlington, Virginia

I grew up in Arlington, Virginia, just across the Potomac River from Washington DC. Back then, my dream was to become a professional dancer. This desire led me to enroll in ballet lessons. In the summer of 1953, a magical opportunity arose when the "Show Boat" production was staged at the Carter Barron Amphitheater in Rock Creek Park, Washington DC. This musical, based on the book by Edna Ferber, brought together a diverse cast, including singers from the Howard University Choral Group. My journey as a dancer was about to take an exciting turn.

The Magical Experience of "Show Boat"

The selection process for the "Show Boat" production was a carefully curated one. My mother and I would attend rehearsals, with me bringing a small lunch in a brown paper bag to the outdoor theater. These moments were filled with anticipation and wonder as I explored the backstage tunnels and costume rooms. The atmosphere was vibrant and filled with the energy of preparation. Fred Kelly, brother of Gene Kelly, was leading the rehearsals with notable ease and clarity.

The rehearsal scenes were incredibly memorable. At one rehearsal, the musical director, Constance Bennett, was observing the children's performances. One of the poignant moments came during the scene involving the character Joe, a prominent black figure in the show, played by a talented actor named William Smith. The song "Ol' Man River" was a deeply emotional moment, a poignant reminder of the struggles of the past, yet it was a transformative experience for me, filled with the beauty of the music and the power of the performance.

The Influence of Faith

My greatest achievement, however, was spiritual. The moment I came to know and accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior was a profound turning point. This faith journey provided a positive influence on those around me and became the cornerstone of my life. Nothing in life can compare to the peace and joy derived from a relationship with Jesus Christ.

As I reflect on my childhood, the lessons of bravery, curiosity, and the transformative power of faith continue to resonate. Whether it was the thrill of performing on "Show Boat" or the deep, personal faith I embraced, these experiences all shaped the person I am today. These memories are not just fond recollections but a testament to the beauty and significance of childhood achievements.
