Christmas Day Eats: Unforgettable and Delicious Traditional Dishes
As Christmas Day approaches, it's a time for traditional meals, warm drinks, and cherished family gatherings. While some families opt for a hearty feast at home, others prefer a lighter celebration with friends or a casual meal out. This year, we explore the unique dishes and drinks often enjoyed on Christmas Day, from festive breakfasts to extravagant dinners.
Traditional Breakfast on Christmas Day
Starting the day with a comforting breakfast is a delightful way to kick off the festive season. A simple yet delicious breakfast might consist of egg bacon mushrooms toast with a touch of butter. A cold drink such as a Bucks Fizz is a perfect way to enjoy a crisp, celebratory sip before the day's festivities.
Festive Lunch and Dinner Plans
This year's Christmas plans are more relaxed due to unforeseen circumstances. We will be dining out at a nearby pub restaurant, which will provide a comfortable and stress-free experience. However, if we feel a bit hungry in the evening, "party bites" from the local supermarket will offer a convenient and tasty snack to enjoy.
For breakfast, we decided to indulge a bit, as it's a day for "time off for good behaviour." The menu for the morning is smoked salmon paté and a simple salad. This light start to the day will help build an appetite for the main event: lunch and dinner.
Lunch
Our lunch is a delicious and convenient farm shop pie containing a raised turkey and cranberry mix. A plain and simple salad will complement the pie, along with a glass of white wine. This offers a change from the usual homemade vegetable soup and bread.
The Afternoon Snack
Between lunch and dinner, we might have a slice of homemade Christmas cake or a mince pie. Whether it's homemade or gifts from afar, these treats carry a special significance during the holiday season.
Main Course for Dinner
The evening's main course is a roast chicken accompanied by roasted winter vegetables. Traditional ingredients like new potatoes, Brussels sprouts, sweetcorn, haricot beans, and a light brown gravy add to the rich feast. Additional touches like a smoked salmon paté and 'Loved Lives Chardonnay provide a delightful contrast to the heartiness of the meal.
Leftovers and Celebration
While we might not manage everything planned for dinner, we embrace the holiday spirit by making the most of the treats available. Any leftovers will be transformed into a hearty dish like bubble and squeak, ensuring that nothing is wasted. For dessert, a Sainsbury's Christmas pudding or a selection of cheese and biscuits completes the meal.
Reflecting on the joys of the holiday season, we remember that having so much to enjoy is a blessing. The story of a man's father who struggled to have a proper Christmas meal during World War II serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of togetherness and the richness of our traditions.
Happy Christmas everyone and a safe, healthy New Year!
