Discovering the Beauty of Food and Travel in Vietnam
My recent river cruise in Vietnam was nothing short of breathtaking. Everywhere I turned, from the lush rolling hills to the heartening history of ancient palaces and war museums, the country exuded a charm that couldn’t be discovered in any book or video. What further excited me were the experiences of exploring its rich culinary and travel landscapes. Here’s what I found, to share with you:
Indulging in Vietnamese Cuisine
Vietnamese food is a melange of taste, texture, and presentation that could be an artist’s painting; a symphony of flavors that sings to your palate from morning till night. Whether you're savoring the chilli-laden pho in the bustling alleys of Hanoi or the delicate aroma of morning soupa, the food is a testament to the unique art of Vietnamese cuisine.
I embarked on my culinary journey with a zest, but my adventure wasn’t as saccharine as expected. Vietnamese soups, especially the soups laden with MSG, had a curious effect on my body, causing slight edema. MSG is widely used in Vietnamese cuisine both at home and in restaurants. While I thoroughly enjoyed the morning soups, I suspect the generous use of MSG might have caused the swelling. This is where the locals tend to differ - some restaurants avoid MSG altogether. A prime example is the restaurant “Ngon” located on Pasteur in Saigon, where the absence of MSG is evident in their dishes. However, it’s important to be cautious and read the menu carefully to pick the right place.
Street Food Excellence and Other Foodie Finds
The vibrant street food scene in Vietnam is a must-try. It offers a perfect blend of simplicity and complexity, making it one of the most desirable culinary destinations. From the popular banh mi (sandwiches) to the iconic pho, each dish tells a story of the rich cultural heritage of Vietnam. The secret lies in the freshness of the ingredients, the use of herbs, and the perfect balance of soy sauce, fish sauce, and vinegar.
There are exquisite foreign dishes in Vietnam too, making it a haven for food enthusiasts. For instance, a German chef grilling sausages from the back of his motorcycle in Khanh Hoi. The affordable sandwiches, which combine the fiery German sausages with the typical Vietnamese bread, are a delightful experience. The combination is not only delicious but also a testament to the culinary creativity of Vietnamese people.
A Journey Through Time and Scenery
Travelling in Vietnam is a delightful adventure, as the country is abundant in its historical and natural beauty. Ancient palaces, war museums, colonial structures, and towering mountains offer a detailed glimpse into the country's rich history. The northern city of Sapa is quintessentially Vietnamese, with its stunning scenery of rice paddies and towering mountains. The central region’s Halong Bay is breathtaking, looking like it was ripped from a Hollywood movie with its fascinating limestone islands and cerulean waters.
The cities, including Hanoi and Saigon, are full of life, culture, and unpredictability. The old quarter in Hanoi, for instance, is crawling with history and character, and exploring it will give you a deeper understanding of the city's soul. For an unforgettable experience, driving the Hai Van Pass from Hoi An to Hue is a must. The scenery is absolutely stunning, making the journey a memorable experience.
The Convenience and Variety of Travel in Vietnam
Travelling in Vietnam is exceptionally convenient. For long distances, trains and buses are your reliable options, while taxis are perfect for short journeys. Planes are beneficial for longer distances in terms of both time and cost. But if you're looking for a unique experience, consider a motorbike. At first, it might seem a tad nerve-wracking, but soon you'll find the freedom exhilarating, as you can explore almost anywhere. Motorbikes also allow you to experience the local vibe truly.
As someone who has travelled extensively in Vietnam, I can assure you that it's a worthy destination. Don't let the potential MSG issue in soups put you off. The food, the travels, and the people will make the trip worthwhile.
