Motivating Yourself to Start Something New: The Power of Curiosity and Action

There's only one way to motivate yourself, and that's by being curious about the next second and stopping saying 'NO' to new things. Life is about experiences, and the exploration of yourself is what truly matters. Knowing who you are and what you're made of is the only success you need, and it's what should motivate you.

Embracing Failure and Taking Your Time

Don't put pressure on yourself to 'succeed'—whatever that might mean to you. Don't be afraid to start by failing. Take your time and go at your own pace. Challenge yourself, but be open to learning. People will teach.

Embrace the learning process. Taking action is the key. Just start, and don't stop. Seek advice from smart people in person, and be open to learning. People are there to teach you.

Chunking Activities and Giving Your Mind a Break

Chunk your activities until you reach a point where your boredom increases. Then come back to the activity. Sometimes, you need to give your ADHD mind some off time so it can cooperate. You can't force yourself to do things as efficiently as neurotypicals, and that's okay. Your capacity for self-motivation has its limits.

Today, I don't feel like doing any more boring readings, but I'm not going to stop now. I'm bored, and that's okay. You don't always have to be logical about everything you do. Obviously, if I had enough dopamine, I would focus purely on grinding without distractions like YouTube, Reddit, or social media. I'm still experimenting with ways to maximize my focus, but I've hit an 'ADHD wall' in terms of sustaining self-motivation.

The Importance of Interest and Self-Discipline

If it doesn't come natural for you to do something, why force yourself? The interest has to be there. If you don't want to do it, don't. Unless it's your mother or a loved one asking you. Do something else that interests you. You're simply out of your mind with boredom. But make sure it's something you want to do.

How can I force myself to start something?

You can force yourself to do something by doing it and then rewarding yourself with something you'd like. The reward part is vitally important to give you the initiative to act upon something you know you should. You're procrastinating for a reason of your own. Perhaps you were forced as a kid to do something you didn't want to do. For me, it was the dishes. But my father wasn't smart enough to figure out how to persuade me with bribery. He succumbed to his lower self by revealing his anger at meThat's a no-no in dealing with smart kids.

So, you can try your hand at self-discipline. Repeat these words: 'I must take responsibility to be productive and progress.' See, when you achieve a small goal, you're being productive and progressing your life. But when you sit idle doing nothing, you're not helping yourself; you're hindering your progress. So get hopping and boot yourself in the butt. Do things for yourself, and you'll grow from that experience.

As Bob Marley says, 'Don’t worry be happy.'

Conclusion

Motivating yourself to start something new is all about embracing your curiosity, being open to learning, and taking action. Reward yourself for small successes, and don't be afraid to set your own pace. Remember, the most important thing is to do what you enjoy and what interests you, and you'll find the motivation to keep going.
