My Favorite Ice Cream Flavors That No One Else Likes

My Favorite Ice Cream Flavors That No One Else Likes

Do you have an ice cream flavor that others might not appreciate? Whether you believe in deep traditions like Creole Cream Cheese in New Orleans or enjoy unique flavors like sakura ice cream and licorice, you've got a story to tell! Here are some under-the-radar favorites that have captured my heart.

Sakura Ice Cream – A Hidden Gem

Among my favorite ice cream flavors is sakura ice cream, a seasonal delight that comes from Japan during sakura season, typically from late March to early April. The delicate, almost floral flavor of sakura (cherry blossom) is a perfect match for the pale pink color that looks as beautiful as it is delicious. If you're not in Japan during this time, fear not! With an ice cream maker and some Sakura ingredients like sakura powder and sakura honey, you can make a reasonable approximation at home.

Licorice Ice Cream – A Childhood Staple

Licorice has held a special place in my heart since I was four. The reason? Fenton’s in Berkeley used to make it, and my dad would buy it for me despite his reservations. It looked like sewer sludge, but it tasted like magic. While it may not be as universally loved as other ice cream flavors, licorice ice cream remains a cherished childhood memory.

Maple Nut and Other Hard-to-Find Flavors

While maple nut ice cream might be easy to find, finding a good one that is truly maple-y enough can be a challenge. The best I've ever had remains a homemade flavor from a little ice cream shop in Indianapolis, which featured a guanábana (soursop) flavor that was absolute heaven. These flavors, though not widely available, embody the magic of discovering a new ice cream flavor.

Among the more uncommon ice cream flavors I gravitate towards, black walnut takes the cake. Finding a good black walnut ice cream can be a treasure hunt, but when you find one, it's worth the search. The deep, rich flavor and unique texture make it a standout choice.

Dark Chocolate and the Watergate Salad

While some might consider my love for chocolate covered in the Watergate salad (a mix of whipped cream, pistachio pudding, crushed pineapples, chopped nuts, and mini-marshmallows) lowbrow, there's something undeniably comforting about it. This sweet treat has become a nostalgic favorite beyond just my immediate family; even those who typically enjoy retro, unsophisticated dishes might not share my passion for it.

Moreover, my family circle can appreciate my preference for dark chocolate, an exquisite treat that I can enjoy in healthy moderation. Unlike some in my family and friends, I find dark chocolate not just good but an absolute delight. However, it's important to remember that this is not the opinion of the general public. Dark chocolate is celebrated globally, and in my local area, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't enjoy it.
