Should BTS Have Served in the Military?

Introduction to Military Service Requirements in South Korea

South Korea, a country technically still at war, mandates that all able-bodied males serve in the military between the ages of 18 and 28. This requirement is strict, with very few exceptions made. Notably, even popular bands like BTS have been required to fulfill their duty. Currently, all seven members are serving, with Jin's return being imminent. Despite their exemption request, they have understood their obligations and have prepared ample content for their fans while serving their country.

Legal Basis for Military Service

Under Korean law, all able-bodied men between the ages of 18 and 28 are required to serve in the military. Those with health problems may be eligible for social service as an alternative to military service. However, there are some notable exceptions to the mandatory military service. These include:

Young entrepreneurs Fathers of two or more children Athletes or classic musicians who have achieved outstanding success

Please note that these exceptions are limited and the qualification criteria change over time.

The BTS Exemption Debate

When BTS approached the age limit of 28, the age for mandatory military service, the question of a special exemption for them was discussed at a high level within the Korean government. A new legislation known as the “BTS law” was passed by the Korean parliament. BTS did not receive an exemption but were given an extension: they could enter the service later than 28 years of age.

Despite the exemption, the debate on a special application for BTS continued in South Korea. On one hand, the current conscription situation is far from ideal and is getting worse. The number of conscripts has been declining every year, and there have been reported changes in the acceptance criteria. For instance, previously undrafted individuals with chronic diseases are now being accepted, and it's even possible that obese individuals are now being considered for active duty when they might not have been in the past.

On the other hand, some argue that exceptions are not fair as people who are perfectly healthy also receive them. BTS's achievements are on par with or even surpass some of the other exempted individuals. The parliament did not reach a decision on this matter in 2021-2022 and ultimately, BTS fulfilled their duty. Some in Korea now argue that the existing exemptions for athletes and classic musicians should be revoked.

In conclusion, while BTS had to serve, the debate around special exemptions for individuals with extraordinary achievements continues. The future of such legislation remains an open question, and it is expected that public opinion and changing circumstances will play significant roles in its evolution.
