The Joyful Moments: Recalling Christmas Memories with Family
Christmas is a time when memories from the past flood our minds, cherishing moments spent with loved ones. For me, one of the most cherished memories comes from my mother's storytelling sessions. These tales, often told during Christmas parties, have a special place in our hearts. Here are two delightful stories that still make me giggle and bring joy to my heart.
Tracy's Terrific Tradition
My older sister, Tracy, whom our mother affectionately calls 'Wildcat,' is a source of endless laughter and endearing antics. Our mother often wove these stories into the fabric of our family gatherings, and I found an unexpected delight in reliving them, particularly during the festive season.
The First Christmas Visit to Santa
When we were six, and little four-year-old me was still a bit of a wild child, mommy and daddy took us to a department store to see Santa during a Christmas tradition. We stood in line, eagerly awaiting our turn to sit on Santa's lap. Tracy, ever the protective older sibling, stood in front of me, her hands firmly on my shoulders, and murmured, 'Don't be scared RJ, don't worry, don't be scared.'
As we inched closer to Santa, her words repeated like a mantra, instilling a sense of fear in my heart. Mother hissed sharply at her, 'Stop saying that to your brother.' Tracy responded with, 'I'm just helping him Mommy.' But our mother was having none of it, exclaiming, 'You're not helping him. You're just making him nervous! Stop saying that.'
Second Year Adventures
The next year, our little adventure continued. With a sick little brother at home, only Tracy and I were in good health. Santa greeted Tracy, our wildcat, with a knowing nod, whispering to him about my rascal tendencies. This time, there was no fear from me—the story took an unexpected twist.
Tracy's Strategic Santa Hug
As Tracy sat on Santa's knee, she leaped with infectious enthusiasm, laughing aloud. When Santa asked if she had been a good girl during the year, she yelled, 'Actually yes, I have been a naughty rascal.' Our laughing mother whispered, 'Oh dear, must I tell the truth?' Father suggested, 'A little white lie, honey.' Mother complied, saying, 'You've been as good as you can be, honey.'
Without hesitation, Tracy nodded and turned to Santa, her eyes sparkling with mischief, announcing, 'There you go.' Navigating the dilemma of what to ask for, she playfully added, 'Could I have two lollipops, please? My little brother is sick at home.' In a touching gesture, she pulled a note from her pocket and handed it to Santa, explaining, 'I forgot this is what my brother would like for Christmas. He's sick at home.' With that, she dashed back to the elf, exclaiming, 'Thank you, Mr. Elf.' Rejoining mommy and daddy, she declared, 'I've got to write him a letter. This man just helps the real Santa.'
Father's Praised Applause
Father couldn't hold back his laughter, lifting her up and proclaiming, 'Tracy, you are a real treasure, an angel in a real treasure.'
These stories, though laced with unintentional mayhem, were filled with love, laughter, and the spirit of the holiday season. They continue to resonate with joy, reminding us of the beauty of sharing these cherished moments with family and friends.
