The Resilience of Small Businesses Amidst the Pandemic
As the world battled the ongoing pandemic, many small businesses faced significant challenges, with devastating impacts in certain sectors.
The Struggle of Small Businesses
The pandemic has been a turning point for many small enterprises, leading to the closure of numerous shops and businesses. For instance, my personal experience as a professional photographer specializing in documenting artists and craftsmen became untenable during the pandemic. Galleries, museums, and craft shows closed, cutting off vital markets for my clients. Many artists could no longer sell their works, reducing their need for my services. By the end of 2021, I could no longer afford to maintain my studio, my lighting equipment, and upgrade my cameras and computers. Eventually, I had to retire at age 64. However, the real tragedy lies in the younger artists who, like me, had to abandon their passions to find basic jobs. This was not always a choice, but due to the economic downturn, many had to make difficult decisions.
The Impact on Small Enterprises
According to industry polls, 82 percent of small enterprises experienced negative impacts in 2020. Manufacturing companies faced severe liquidity shortages, as the production of non-essential goods was restricted. For enterprises dependent on traditional sales methods, like in-person events, the situation was even more dire. Many were unable to use e-commerce, which led to long periods of inactivity. The decline in small enterprises has had a direct impact on India's economic slowdown, as they have historically been crucial to the country's growth.
Adapting to a New Reality
While some small businesses struggled, others managed to adapt. Local services such as groceries, vegetable vendors, and other essential services saw an uptick in demand as people shifted their purchasing habits. However, non-essential goods and services, such as clothes, shoes, and make-up, shifted entirely to online platforms. This shift to e-commerce has been a silver lining for some, allowing them to continue operations and reach a broader customer base without the need for physical stores.
The government recognized the critical role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and took steps to mitigate the damage. They kept the company registration fees at a very nominal 15 Lac to encourage new businesses and minimize the administrative burden. This initiative aims to support budding entrepreneurs and small business owners.
While the road ahead remains uncertain, the resilience of small businesses is a testament to their adaptability and dedication. As we move forward, it is crucial to support these enterprises and ensure they have the resources they need to thrive.
